A Tour of a Human Hepatocyte
These extraordinary TEM microscopy shots by Dennis Kunkel are images of functioning organelles of a hepatocyte, or liver cell. The first image is the whole cell - the nucleus is the circular bit in the middle, and the blue lines through the cytoplasm are the endoplasmic reticulum. The red globules are mitochondria. On the second row to the left, ribosomes and polysomes are seen. On that same row to the right is a shot of the endoplasmic reticulum - the rough ER, as ribosomes are attached. The final image is a close-up shot of the nucleus and nucleolus; cytoplasm, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, and ribosomes are also shown.
All images are the property of Dennis Kunkel. His website, and his other image collections, can be found here.
